Buy it Free

Many years ago, I had a precious conversation with a friend’s daughter that touches me to this very day.  This sweet little girl, probably no more than five years old, greeted me in her driveway to ask if I would like to buy one of her homemade crafts. When I asked how much it cost, she replied with a grin, “It’s FREE!”

Without knowing it, my friend’s daughter brought Isaiah 55:1 to life for me.

“Come, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and he who has no money, come, buy, and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.”

Isaiah 55:1, ESV

None of us has the “money” to buy eternal life.  Even our “righteous deeds are like a polluted garment (see Isaiah 64:6).”  The Bible leaves no room for doubt – we have no righteousness without Jesus Christ. How then does one buy something for free?  Someone else paid for it, of course!

“Out of the anguish of His soul He shall see and be satisfied; by His knowledge shall the Righteous One, my Servant, make many to be accounted righteous, and He shall bear their iniquities. Therefore I will divide Him a portion with the many, and He shall divide the spoil with the strong, because He poured out His soul to death and was numbered with the transgressors; yet He bore the sin of many, and makes intercession for the transgressors.” Isaiah 53:11-12, ESV

As we can see in Isaiah 53, Jesus paid dearly for our sin. We earned death from our sin, but Jesus graciously paid our debt with His life.

“For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Jesus Christ our Lord.”

Romans 6:23, ESV

Praise God that Jesus won salvation for us with His righteous life (see Isaiah 53:10)!    The only One righteous is God’s Son, the Word made flesh (see John 1:14). Jesus gained victory over death and shares the spoils us when we receive Him!

“But to all who did receive Him, who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God…”

John 1:12, ESV
